The much-awaited 5-match one-day international series between reigning World Champions India and the current World T20 Champions Sri Lanka is just a few days away. Despite the absence of some marquee names including Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Lasith Malinga, the series is poised to be a close affair between the two teams with onus being shifted on to the young players.

Here, we take a look at the 5 players who could go all guns blazing throughout the series…


He is foreseen as a cricketing legend and the deserving successor of the very great Sachin Tendulkar. With a stunning average of over 51 and 20 centuries in just 140 matches, he has proved that no bowling attack is lethal for him. Moreover, stepping in to the side as the skipper in absence of regular captain, Dhoni, Virat would certainly be on the top of this list.


One of the very few playing legends of the sport, Kumar Sangakkara is a complete package. His ability to blend flamboyancy and tranquility has made him what he is today. The 37-year-old from Matale will look for another milestone on this tour, where he needs just 166 runs to reach 13,000 runs in one-day international cricket.


Another living legend from Colombo, Mahela Jayawardene is a gifted and hard-working batsman. He will look to add another feather to his cap this series, needing just 163 runs to complete 12,000 runs in this format of the game. Having announced his retirement from Tests and T20 internationals to concentrate more on the one-day international format, Jayawardene could be more perilous than ever now.


The lanky speed-star from Delhi has been in-and-out of the Indian team. However, his ability to get some extra bounce incessantly has cemented his place in the Test team from quite a while now. Making his return to this format of the sport after a reasonably long time, Ishant Sharma will look to make the most of this opportunity and fancy his chances of getting into the World Cup squad next year. Moreover, his miraculous spell at Lord’s against England has made him one the players to watch out for in this series.


Known for his explosive style of batting, Dilshan is competent of swaying away the bowlers and hitting the ball hard all around the ground. You can’t afford to bowl full deliveries with no movement to him, for if you do so, don’t be afraid to see the ball race beyond the boundary line in a jiffy.
