Ian Chappell Says Virat Kohli Should Replace MS Dhoni as India’s Test Captain

Former Australia captain, Ian Chappell, says India’s regular skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s ‘use-by’ date has passed by and that Virat Kohli should be replaced as full-time skipper for the longest format of the game.

Kohli, who was handed India’s Test captaincy in absence of Dhoni for the series opener against Australia in Adelaide, showed immense potential as he smashed centuries in both the innings to become just the second batsman to do so in the history of the sport, but his heroics went in vain as India lost the Test by a whisker.

After a well-made 115 in the first innings, Kohli tagged along an incredible 141-run knock in the second innings that almost sealed the match for India, before a fumble in the rest of the batting department led to their hammering.

“Kohli’s performance over three and a half days must have tempted the selectors into thinking now is the right time to elevate him to full-time Test captaincy,” Chappell wrote in his column for ESPNcricinfo.

“There’s no doubt that MS Dhoni has passed his use-by-date as a Test captain, and this seems the perfect time to enact the changeover,” he added.

Dhoni is set to resume his international duty as the skipper from the second Test match that begins from December 17 in Brisbane.
