It’s no secret that Gautam Gambhir doesn’t mince his words. And this time is no different.

The former opener took a subtle dig at India captain Virat Kohli, suggesting he looks comfortable leading the team only in the company of seasoned compatriots MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma.

“Still a long way to go for him,” Gambhir, during a recent media event, said of his former Delhi teammate.

“Kohli was very good in the last World Cup but he has a long way to go. He captains so well in international cricket because he has got Rohit Sharma, he had MS Dhoni for a long time.”

Gambhir further highlighted Kohli’s failure as captain of Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Royal Challengers Bangalore.

“Captaincy credentials are noticed when you are leading a franchise, when you do not have other players supporting you,” he opined.

“I have been honest whenever I have spoken about this. See what Rohit Sharma has achieved for Mumbai Indians, see what Dhoni has achieved for Chennai Super Kings.

“If you compare that with RCB, the results are there for everyone to see.”

This is not the first time Gambhir has criticized Kohli’s captaincy skills. Before the start of IPL earlier this year, the former had expressed surprise at RCB

Kohli, meanwhile, has been letting his bat do the talking, having scored a fluent 72 not out to help India beat South Africa in the second T20 International earlier this week.
