Virat Kohli pulled off a Virat Kohli on Sunday, scoring a century as India defeated West Indies by 59 runs in the second of the three-match ODI series in Trinidad.

The Indian captain, who hadn’t reached the three-figure mark in eleven innings – quite a gap by his standards – smashed 120 off just 125 balls to mark his 42nd ODI hundred.

In the process, he not only surpassed Saurav Ganguly’s runs in 50-over international cricket, but also remains just seven tons short of Sachin Tendulkar’s all-time record of 49.

Wasim Jaffer, a former Indian batsman himself, was so impressed with Kohli’s latest performance that he predicted the latter to extend his century count to “75-80”.

“Normal services resumes (sic) after a break of 11 innings!! i.e. another international for Virat Kohli,” Jaffer tweeted. “My prediction is he will get 75-80 ODIs #KingKohli.”

Statsman Mohandas Menon also suggested Kohli will reach the mark if he continues to bat the way he is.

“Virat Kohli now has 42 ODI 100s in 229 inns. At the current conversation rate and form… * he can reach 50th ODI 100 in his 272nd inns, ie another eight 100s in his next 43 inns. * he can take his tally to 83 ODI 100s in 452 inns!” he wrote.
