VIDEO: Denis Shapovalov wears down opponent Richard Berankis during stunning rally at Indian Wells
Rising star Denis Shapovalov got his campaign off to a winning start at the Indian Wells Masters following a 6-3 6-4 win over qualifier Richard Berankis of Lithuania on Thursday.
Although the Canadian was not at his best – committing as many as seven double faults during the 72-minute encounter – he caught eyes by winning a stunning point over his nemesis.
During the last game of the match, a Shapovalov forehand deflected off the net, making Berankis face a drop-shot-like situation. A sprint ensued and the return was made.
Shapovalov responded with a lob, forcing another dash from Berankis. Another return followed – through a tweener this time. Now, an intended drop shop from Shapovalov.
Berankis was down and out. Wow!
Shapovalov went on to book a second-round clash with Uruguay’s Pablo Cuevas, scheduled to be held on Saturday.
This. Point. Had. Everything.
