Stanislas Wawrinka Stuns Novak Djokovic to Capture Maiden US Open Title
Maintaining his clean record in Grand Slam finals, Stanislas Wawrinka pulled off his maiden US Open title after surprising World No. 1 Novak Djokovic in the Sunday’s title-clash.
Having already won the Australian Open (2014) and the French Open (2015), the 31-year-old Swiss accentuated his competency of performing on the biggest stages as he remains just major shy (Wimbledon, of course) of completing a career Grand Slam.
Djokovic, who was bothered by fitness issues coming into the tournament, looked uncomfortable during the final set before losing 6-7 6-4 7-5 6-3 to the No. 3 seed.
As a result, Wawrinka became only the third man – after Djokovic and Andy Murray – to seal his place in the ATP World Tour Finals that will be held from November 13-20.
Earlier on Saturday, Angelique Kerber won the women’s singles crown following a 6-3 4-6 6-4 conquest of first-time finalist Karolina Pliskova in the summit battle.
This was Kerber’s second Grand Slam triumph after the Australian Open this year. The victory has also propelled her ranking to No. 1 for the first time in her career.
Other Winners
Jamie Murray and Bruno Soares (men’s doubles)
Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Lucie Safarova (women’s doubles)
Laura Siegemund and Mate Pavic (mixed doubles)
