Kei Nishikori Advances but Fernando Verdasco Falls at Barcelona Open
It turned out to be an uncomplicated day in the office for the seeds at the ATP 500 Barcelona Open on Tuesday.
Top seed Kei Nishikori put up a dominating performance to pull off a 6-3 6-4 conquest of Russian journeyman Teymuraz Gabashvili. Besides emerging unbroken on his serve, the fifth-ranked Japanese won 90 percent of his first-serve points to progress into the quarterfinals.
7th seed Roberto Bautista Agut also clinched an identical triumph. The Spaniard ruled on his supreme first serve to score a 6-3 6-4 win against 75th-ranked Brazilian Thomaz Bellucci to sail into the last-eight stage of the tournament.
It was, however, the end of the road for Spanish veteran Fernando Verdasco, who suffered s stunning 7-6 6-3 defeat from the hands of 17-year-old Russian Andrey Rublev in the opening-round encounter.
