Jo-Wilfried Tsonga is against wildcards for Maria Sharapova
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga insists that handing wildcard to tainted tennis star Maria Sharapova for Roland Garros would be like “giving a candy to a child who has misbehaved.”
Sharapova, who was banned for using meldonium following the Australian Open last year, is scheduled to make her return in Stuttgart next month, where she received a wildcard.
And there have been talks whether or not the Russian should get a direct entry into the premier clay-court event. Tsonga, for that matter, would be disappointed if that happens.
“I do not think it makes any sense for Maria to have a wild card. Honestly, offering you an invitation right now will be like giving a candy to a child who has misbehaved,” the Frenchman was quoted as saying by bolamarela.pt.
Tsonga’s comments come just days after Australian tennis player Nick Kyrgios said “cheaters” should not be given wildcards.
