Rafael Nadal has finally lost a set on clay this season… to Dominic Thiem
Rafael Nadal hasn’t dropped a set on clay this season, right? Wrong.
The ‘King of Clay’ just broke his streak of 46 consecutive sets after losing to Dominic Thiem on the red dirt.
There’s a catch to it though. And if you’re a Nadal fan, you will be happy to read this: it was a practice match. So, you can call it an illegal defeat,
Yes, the Spaniard lost a tightly-contested first set 5-7 before bouncing back to take the second 6-1 against the Austrian world No. 7.
Sigh! The record is still intact.
The 16-time Grand Slam champion will hope that remains the case when he competes at the upcoming Madrid Masters.
Nadal has a bye first up and is likely square off against French veteran Gael Monfils in the second round.
