Anthony Joshua fans were handed perhaps the worst news they could get after the unbeaten Briton was knocked out by massive underdog Andy Ruiz Jr. in his US debut over the weekend.

Joshua, the erstwhile holder of IBF, IBO, WBA and WBO heavyweight belts, was dropped to the canvas as many as four times before being stopped in the seventh round by his 32-1 opponent Ruiz.

And seconds after the referee waved it off, his father Robert was so upset that he charged at promoter Eddie Hearn, telling him something while pointing fingers at him, forcing Joshua to hold him back.

“Anthony’s dad was upset with the result and the ref,” he told Behind The Gloves. “It was a very emotional time for everyone. I was trying to keep calm.

“I think sometimes you have to forget what’s in play, the money, the networks, the belts and remember it’s just sport.”

Hearn went on to say Ruiz won fair and square and that the Mexican was the better than Joshua on the day.

“I’ve been brought up to say if you lose, you lose,” he said.

“You get beaten by someone who deserves to win and that’s what happened. You have to simplify it and say Joshua got beaten by the better guy.”
