Steelers RBs Le’Veon Bell & LeGarrette Blount Will Play Tonight Against Philadelphia Despite Marijuana Charges

It looks like the 2014 season is getting started on a sour note for Pittsburgh Steelers running backs Le’Veon Bell and LeGarrette Blount.

Both players were cited for marijuana possession after a traffic stop by a Ross Township, Penn., motorcycle officer, who smelled the strong odor of marijuana coming from a Camaro driven by Bell. A search produced a 20-gram bag of marijuana, and both Bell and Blount, in addition to an unnamed female passenger, took mutual ownership of it.

But Bell got the worst of it, being taken to a nearby hospital to submit to a blood test that will most likely result in him being charged with driving under the influence of marijuana.

A panel of FOX Sports analysts broke down the scenario:

All three of the suspects will be issued formal charges by mail. Their alleged crimes are misdemeanors.

It’s a disappointing finding for the Steelers, who will play their third preseason game against the Philadelphia Eagles tonight. Both Bell and Blount, who figure to share time in the talented Steelers’ backfield, were expected to get a decent amount of work, but that is now up in the air.

The Steelers are still trying to get a firm grasp of the situation, as team spokesman Burt Lauten was hush in his initial response:

“We are aware of the reports and still gathering information,” Steelers spokesman Burt Lauten said. “We will have no further comment at this time.”

However, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported that Bell and Blount are unlikely to be disciplined harshly, and it won’t come immediately, as the NFL usually awaits the governing legal body’s decision before handing down punishment of their own:

“The two probably face no more than a one-game suspension and that won’t come anytime soon. Bell could be in for a tad more if tests at the hospital yesterday showed he indeed was driving under the drug’s influence.”

Late last week, Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Dwayne Bowe was issued a one-game suspension for a similar incident where he was busted for marijuana possession in a traffic stop last November. Bell could be facing a bit harsher penalty for his DUI charge, however.

Stay tuned to TSM Plug NFL to see how this finding impacts the Steelers’ upcoming season, if at all.

The NFL Network’s Aditi Kinkhabwala reported that Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin will indeed play both Bell and Blount in the team’s third preseason game against the Eagles tonight.

Apparently the only reason Bell was left off the team’s charter flight to Philadelphia because it took him longer to go through booking than it did Blount:
