The Five Biggest Winners From The 2018 NFL Draft

256 players were selected across seven rounds in the 2018 NFL Draft as the 32 teams put all of their research and tactics into practice to help improve their rosters for the new season ahead. Of the 256 players, 39 were linebackers, while 13 quarterbacks were chosen this year, five of which went in the very first round.

Here is a look at the five biggest winners from this year’s draft.

Cleveland Browns

Following their 0-16 season in 2017, the Cleveland Browns were on the clock first in the 2018 NFL Draft and it was very obvious they were looking for a quarterback. Some people were surprised that they opted for Baker Mayfield over Sam Darnold; however, they have last year’s Heisman Trophy winner, who scored 41 touchdowns in 2017 as he had the best season of his college career.

The 23-year-old is likely to be an immediate starter in the NFL and the Browns will be hoping he can make a flying start to his career in the league. The Browns now have the longest active playoff drought in the NFL at 15 seasons; therefore, if Mayfield is the answer to their problems, their aim will be to end that wait for post-season football.

New York Jets

As soon as they realised Darnold was not going as the first overall pick last month, the New York Jets wasted no time moving up the board as they traded with the Indianapolis Colts, which could prove to be a masterstroke if their new quarterback lives up to the hype. Like the Browns, the Jets have struggled at the quarterback position in recent years so they had to try to resolve that.

This class looks a particular strong year for quarterbacks therefore the Jets felt it was worth giving up some second round picks for the 2017 All-Pack 12 member. The 20-year-old from California helped USC win the Rose Bowl last year and was a starter when the Trojans won eight consecutive matches. This suggests his management of games is very good.

Philadelphia Eagles

The Philadelphia Eagles won their first ever Super Bowl back in February and are many people’s tip to lift the Vince Lombardi Trophy once again in the NFL next season where, as of the May 3rd, they are 8/1 in the ante-post betting with Betway to defend their title. The Eagles did not have a first-round pick this year, however, they made a great manoeuvre in the second round to move up the board to take tight end Dallas Goedert.

What was so significant about that selection was that it was rumoured that their NFC East rivals the Dallas Cowboys were preparing to take the player as the 50th overall pick. The Eagles trading to have the 49th overall selection was a real blow to the five-time Super Bowl winners who will still be searching for Jason Witten’s replacement.

Indianapolis Colts

The Indianapolis Colts were one of the few teams at the top end of the draft board in round one who weren’t in for a quarterback this year, and that gave them a lot of power to trade for some extra picks.

The deal with the Jets not only allowed them to still take guard Quenton Nelson in the first round but they also acquired four of the 32 players in the second round in Darius Leonard, Braden Smith, Kemoko Turay and Tyquan Lewis. The Colts struggled last season as they won just four of their 16 games in 2017. With Andrew Luck set to return this year and with so many quality draft picks, they could be an outside shot to win the AFC South.

San Francisco 49ers

There were signs last season that the San Francisco 49ers are moving in the right direction under former Browns offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan. Quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo has helped the team find their winning touch again.

The 49ers biggest acquisition from the 2018 NFL Draft was first round pick Mike McGlinchey who is an offensive tackle who has been brought in to protect their franchise quarterback. With some smart picks in the later rounds too, it is easy to see why many pundits are predicting San Francisco to have a big year.

The 2018 season begins this year on September 7th when the Atlanta Falcons host the Philadelphia Eagles.
