Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin has made some big strides since suffering a dislocated ankle against the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 2.

The star signal caller returned to practice last week, beginning individual drills in an effort to gauge how long it will be until he returns. Head coach Jay Gruden said that he would re-assess the situation today (Wed., October 22, 2014), and while he wouldn’t rule Griffin out, he did say that the third-year player still has a “long way to go” before he could get back on the field.

It appears that Gruden has diagnosed the situation and Griffin is not where he needs to be. Dianne Marie Russini of NBC Washington just tweeted that there is reportedly no chance of Griffin playing in Washington’s Week 8 clash with the Dallas Cowboys:

That’s not exactly surprising news, as Griffin sustained a very serious injury after returning from a 2013 season where he was obviously hindered by the torn ACL that ended his illustrious rookie campaign. The team wants him back to full health before he takes over as their unquestioned starter, and rushing him back to the field will only get him injured again.

Washington picked up just their second win of the season in Week 7, squeaking out a 19-17 nail biter over Tennessee when third string quarterback Colt McCoy took over for backup Kirk Cousins in the second half.

McCoy has been named the starter now that Griffin apparently won’t go, but there is only so long that they can contend with a third stringer as their starting quarterback in the rough NFC East. Griffin could be back in time for Week 9; his status will be updated frequently next week.

Until then, the Redskins will have to cross their fingers and hope the inexperienced McCoy can somehow lead to an upset of the best team in the league.
