Report: Stevan Ridley To Be Left Off Patriots Opening Day Roster

Last year New England Patriot running back Stevan Ridley entered the season as one of the most touted rushers in the league after gaining 1,263 yards and 12 touchdowns in 2012.

But his production severely dipped after he fumbled the ball twice in the Patriots’ opening game of 2013, relegating him to head coach Bill Belichick’s doghouse and a timeshare with LeGarrette Blount and Brandon Bolden.

This morning news comes that Ridley’s inability to hold onto the ball may cost him much more, as ESPN Boston’s Mike Reiss has speculated that Ridley will be left off the team’s final 53-man roster.

These projections aren’t set in stone, but Reiss is usually quite accurate with his Patriots information.

The team projects to keep four running backs on their roster, and right now, only Shane Vereen, James White, Bolden, and Jonas Gray figure to be in the mix come opening day on September 7, 2014.

Ridley lost yet another fumble in Week 2 preseason action, signifying that the New England coaching staff simply doesn’t have much faith (or patience) left for him. If he is indeed cut, look for him to be quickly scooped up by another team in need of a solid running back.

There’s no doubting the effectiveness of Ridley’s physical, between-the-tackles style of running. If he could only keep the ball in his hands, he’d most likely fill the stat sheet on a weekly basis.

That’s a big if, however. Stay tuned to TSM Plug NFL for all of your NFL news, highlights, predictions, and more.
