Andy Reid: ‘Freak’ Injury Forced Jamaal Charles Out Of Sunday’s Loss To Carolina

When Kansas City Chiefs star running back (RB) Jamaal Charles was held out of last night’s (Sun., August 17, 2014) 28-16 loss to the Carolina Panthers, a collective gasp came out of the mouths of both Chiefs fans and fantasy football players everywhere.

After all, Charles, who totaled an absurd 1,980 yards from scrimmage and 19 touchdowns last year, sits atop most fantasy draft boards heading into 2014. Sparse details were available about his ominous injury until Chiefs head coach Andy Reid addressed the media after the game last night.

According to Reid, Charles’ injury was simply a ‘freak’ occurrence that shouldn’t keep him out of any relevant action. His words, courtesy of the Chiefs’ official website:

“With Jamaal Charles, he twisted his foot and kind of freak thing. It didn’t happen at practice. It was after practice [when] we were leaving and so, we held him out. Precautionary measures. I think he’s going to be fine but I left him back at home. We’ll go from there but he’s doing well.”

It’s no surprise to see a team’s star player held out of a relatively inconsequential preseason game, but anytime a running back of his caliber twists a foot, it’s obviously a newsworthy occurrence.

Reid apparently held Charles out to be safe, an understandable action to be sure. With most of the Chiefs’ offense running through the talented legs and hands of Charles, the team is going to need their bell cow now more than ever, and they’re going to need him healthy.

We’ll just have to wait and see how Charles’ ‘freak’ injury hinders his preparation for the 2014 season. Stay tuned to TSM Plug for all of your NFL news updates, fantasy information, and much more.
