India veteran MS Dhoni faced criticism following his slow knock against Afghanistan last weekend. Naturally, he was at the centre of attention when he came out to bat against the West Indies in Manchester on Thursday.

And guess what? He almost made things worse for him.

While batting on eight, Dhoni decided to step out against left-arm orthodox bowler Fabian Allen. The ball turned more than he expected it to and whizzed past his bat. Even as Dhoni had given up, wicket-keeper Shai Hope made a mess out of it by failing to effect a stumping… not once, but twice.

To add to the woes, Dhoni called his partner Virat Kohli for a quick single before a perplexed Hope could even comprehend what was going around him.

The error cost West Indies big time as Dhoni went on to score an unbeaten 56 off 61 balls – including 16 from Oshane Thomas’ final over – as India put on 268-7 on board.

Captain Virat Kohli (72), opener KL Rahul (48) and Hardik Pandya (46) were the other contributors.

For West Indies, Kemar Roach finished with three wickets while Sheldon Cottrell and Jason Holder picked two each.
