Saurav Ganguly has turned up in defence of under-fire MS Dhoni after the veteran wicketkeeper-batsman was criticized by Sachin Tendulkar recently.

Dhoni came under the scanner for his slow knock during India’s 12-run win over Afghanistan in their latest fixture at the World Cup.

Coming in at No. 5, the 37-year-old could only manage 28 runs off 52 balls, struggling big time against the opposition’s spinners all the while.

Ganguly, however, believes it was just one day in the office for Dhoni.

“At the end of the day, MSD is a very good batsman and he will definitely prove that in this year’s World Cup 2019 as well despite his sticky form against Afghanistan,” he said of Dhoni, who was involved in a 57-run partnership (84 balls) with Kedar Jadhav. “It’s just one match.”

Ganguly’s comments come after his ex-teammate Tendulkar censured Dhoni for not showing intent.

“I felt slightly disappointed, it could have been much better. I was also not happy with the partnership between Kedar and Dhoni, it was very slow,” Tendulkar had said.

“We batted 34 overs of spin bowling and scored 119 runs. This was one area where we didn’t look comfortable at all. There was no positive intent.”

India next face the West Indies in Manchester on Thursday.
