January Window is half way through and we have not seen any major transfer and we probably wont see any till the summer window, this is now becoming a trend as even if teams are struggling they are reluctant to buy new players in january window and rightly so. So today we take a look at 10 of the biggest transfers which promised so much but failed to deliver the value for money or hype. So lets get down the business.

10. Alberto Aquilani
Transfer: Roma to Liverpool in 2009
Transfer fee: £18 Million

A very talented youngster, signed for Liverpool from Roma in another bizare Benitez transfer. He made just 18 apprearences for Liverpool which cost them 1 million for a appearence and off he went back to Italy with Fiorentina.

Now a decent player with Fiorentina.
8. Stephane Guivarc’h
Transfer from: Auxerre to Newcastle (1998)
Fee: £3.5 Million

Newcastle United signed him before the World CUp 1998 and even during the world cup it was evident he was out of his depth when he missed many chances. Though he managed to win the world cup with Zidane’s brilliance he failed miserably in Premier League. Offloaded after couple of months to scotland. It was not much of a wastage of money but anti climax of the hype surronding him.

7. Fernando Morientes
Transfer from: Real Madrid to Liverpool in 2005
Fee Paid: £6.3 million

Three Champions League title under his belt, Morientes was considered as one of the best forward at the time when he signed for Liverpool. But he lacked a definate burst of pace and looked so sluggish with the ball. Scored only 12 league goals in over 2 years. We all though he was better than that.
6. Afonso Alves
Transfer from: Heerenveen to Middlesbrough (2008)
Fee Paid: £13.5 million

THe brazlian who was banging in goals dutch league, where his goal to game ratio was more than 1.10 Middlesbrough thought they bought a cheap ronaldo and celebrated his arrival with carnival. But jsut 13 goals for the club in 2 years made him a laughing stock even for his own gans. Now plays in middle east.
5. Francis Jeffers
Transfer Fee: Everton to Arsenal in 2001
Fee Paid: £8.5 million

They called him “white ian rush” promised so much at the mere age of just 20, Arsenal payed everton 8 million pounds back in 2001 which was at that time quite a big transfer. Though he failed miserably and left Arsenal couple of years later. been on transfers so many times in lower leagues, in australia, in malta and in middle east. seems like nobody wants him.
4. Owen Hargreaves
Transfer: Bayern Munich to Manchester United in 2007
Fee Paid: £17.5 Million

Not sure we should call it a flop or unlucky. Guy definately had talent and class to be successful. His goals against Arsenal and Fulham in two back to back league games where United won 1-0, while his contribution to Champions League winning team was great. But been injured for couple of years, made a comeback and again on treatment table. Breif spell with Man City but retired at the end of 2012-13 season.

BT Sports Pundit.
3. David Bentley
Blackburn to Tottenham in 2008
Fee Paid: £15 million

Now thats interesting one, widely hailed as new David Beckam Bentley had couple of good season’s with Blackburn Rovers before his big money transfer to spurs. They guy was a total let down huge loss of money. Been part of Spurs wage bill for 4 years and many loan spells.

Now a free agent.
2. Andriy Shevchenko
AC Milan to Chelsea in 2006
Fee Paid: £30 Million

At his peak in AC Milan he was widely considered one of the best fowards in the world, signed for CHelsea with Abrahmovic connection, he failed to get regular place in Chelsea lineup, let alone being a star. If we compare Chelsea;s torres and Shevchenko the later is bigger flop purely due to the money the spent on him
Where is he now ?
1. Juan Sebastian Veron
Lazio to Manchester United in 2001
Fee Paid: £28.1 Million

Veron signed from Serie A team lazio, where he was able to control games at will because nature of the gameplay in italian league. United though they are signing a estabilished super star at record fee of £28.1million but Veron failed to adapt to United’s play because of his speed. Sold to chelsea where he did not get any better. The biggest flop and disappointment in premier league history.

Where is he now ?
