Novak Djokovic and Juan Martin del Potro played out a stunning match in the quarter-finals of the Italian Open on Friday.

In a battle that went on for more than three hours, the world No. 1 Djokovic saved two match points before prevailing 4-6 7-6 6-4 over the 2009 US Open champion.

And, the duo produced a moment of brilliance in the fifth game of the third set. Del Potro was making Djokovic run all around, when the latter went for a spectacular backhand return, which almost went past the former.

Wasn’t to be though as del Potro stretched as much as he could and unleashed a pitch-perfect drop shot, much to the amazement of his opponent.

Djokovic couldn’t help but applaud the effort as he went on to high-five the Argentine. No wonder, the gesture was highly applauded by the crowd.

“I never lost faith I could come back to the match,” Djokovic was quoted as saying by ATP World Tour.

“One break of serve, mini break in the tie-break when he was 6/4, more or less open forehand that he was making the entire match, that’s all it took for me to come back.

“[He] missed a couple crucial points in the tie-break. Also break point third set, quite easy forehand. That’s what happens. That’s sport. I’m just really pleased to overcome.”

Moving on, the 15-time Grand Slam champion is scheduled to lock horns with Diego Schwartzman of Argentina on Saturday, with the winner on course to face ‘King of Clay’ Rafael ‘King of Clay’ Nadal in the final.
