Roger Federer advanced to the quarter-finals of the Gerry Weber Open following a three-set win over Jo-Wilfried Tsonga on Thursday.

It wasn’t all smooth for Federer though as Tsonga fired 15 aces (against 7 from Federer), won 83 per cent of the points on his first serve (against Federer’s 76) to give his Swiss opponent a run for his money.

Federer eventually won 7-6 4-6 7-5 in a thrilling contest that lasted two hours and 16 minutes.

Midway during the third set, Federer – after unleashing a perfect serve – hit an un-Federerisque volley that crashed straight on to the net.

“Adding to our constant anxiety, he likes to give us some heart strokes just for his fun!” one person quipped on Twitter.

“Thank you. That actually did make me feel better,” another one said.

He’s a human, after all!

Federer, meanwhile, will next lock horns with Spain’s Roberto Bautista Agut for a place in the last four stage on Friday.
