Venus Williams Topples Caroline Wozniacki for Auckland Crown
Veteran American tennis star, Venus Williams, triumphed over a first-set debacle to beat top seed Caroline Wozniacki for the ASB Classic title in Auckland on Saturday.
Third-seeded Williams recovered from a 2-6 deficit in the opening set, to ultimately pull off a 2-6 6-3 6-3 conquest of her Danish counterpart in just under two hours.
“The first set went fast. After that I was like, ‘All right, time to take it to three,’” a victorious Venus was quoted as saying by WTATennis.com. “But of course with her playing that well, I had to find a way just to get it to three.”
Meanwhile, Wozniacki reflected her loss, saying: “Venus played really well. She’s had a great week. I served really well at the start, and I was putting a lot of pressure on her, but she played better and better as the match went on.”
Interestingly, this was Williams’ sixth career-win against Wozniacki in as many meetings on the women’s tour between the duo.
In doubles final, top seeds Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci thrashed Renata Voracova 6-2, 6-1 to clinch the title here.
