Top Seed Agnieszka Radwanska Makes Winning Start at Katowice Open
Tournament favorite Agnieszka Radwanska got off to a triumphant start at the WTA Katowice Open after pulling off a straight-set conquest of Belgian Yanina Wickmayer in the opening round on Tuesday.
The top-seeded Pole had nerves of steel at several occasions, saving as many as 10 off the 11 break points to clinch a 6-1 6-3 victory in the battle that lasted for one hour and 19 minutes.
“I think it was a good match for me from beginning to end,” Radwanska commented afterward. “I was a bit nervous because she’s a very big fighter and never gives up, but I think I played a pretty solid match.”
Up next, Radwankska is scheduled to lock horns with World No. 112 An-Sophie Mestach of Belgium for a place in the last-eight stage.
