Steve Johnson to Replace John Isner as New American No. 1 in ATP Rankings
Steve Johnson is set to be crowned the new American No. 1 when the ATP releases the latest men’s singles rankings on Monday.
This comes after Johnson made it to his first-ever quarter-final of a Masters event following a stunning 6-3 7-6 conquest of seventh seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga at the Western and Southern Open in Cincinnati on Thursday.
The 26-year-old is all set to take over the reins from John Isner, who has held the position since July 2013.
“[It] hasn’t sunk in yet. I just found out [about the record]. So it’s an honor, it really is,” Johnson was quoted as saying Associated Press.
“John has held that spot for a while, and I’m just glad that there are a bunch of Americans pushing toward the top,” added Johnson, who now meets Grigor Dimitrov in the last-eight stage,
Interestingly, Johnson won his first and only ATP singles title so far in Nottingham earlier this year.
