Roger Federer Says Novak Djokovic, Not Andy Murray, the Favourite for US Open

Roger Federer believes that Novak Djokovic is the favourite to win the upcoming US Open title even as he backs Andy Murray to give the Serb a run for his money.

Murray has perhaps been in the form of his life, bagging the top honours at Wimbledon and the Olympic Games. The top-ranked Djokovic, on the contrary, has had a slight dip of late, with his last appearance being a first-round exit (lost to Juan Martin del Potro) from the Rio Olympics.

For Federer, this is not a criterion to rule Djokovic out. “It hasn’t really changed my opinion that Novak is the favourite, despite a few tough losses,” Federer, who is slated to miss the season-ending Grand Slam due to an injury, was quoted as saying by Daily Mail.

Further accentuating the Serb’s track record, the Swiss maestro added: “He did win in Toronto. He has a great record against Andy [24-10] and is a great hard court player [402-65], you see that in the conditions like here and at the Australian Open.”

He, however, doesn’t write Murray off. “But I have been very impressed by Andy, what he has done this summer has been incredible,” Federer continued. “I hope he can keep that going. I think it will be a very exciting US Open and probably a great race between them until the end of the season.”

The US Open is scheduled to get underway on Monday.
