Nick Kyrgios has hit back at Pat Rafter after the former tennis star called for the controversial Australian to be suspended.

Kyrgios’ temperamental behaviour has been subject to discussion this season, with the highlight being a run-in with chair umpire Fergus Murphy, whom he called a ‘f*****g tool’ while appearing to spit in his direction at the Cincinnati Masters. Consequently, he was fined $113,000 for his actions.

Rafter, however, appeared surprised by the fact Kyrgios has faced no action yet.

‘I don’t understand why it hasn’t happened,” the two-time Grand Slam champion was quoted as saying.

“There is obviously something else going on behind the scenes. I don’t know. On paper it looks like he should be suspended, to me.”

Kyrgios later took to his official Twitter handle to accuse the 46-year-old for trying to stay ‘relevant.’

“Probably because everywhere I play the stadiums are sold out, and the event makes money with me around?” he wrote.

“Not surprised rafter has commented on this topic, guy loves hanging fellow aussies out to dry. Enjoy staying relevant champ.”

Meanwhile, Kyrgios is next expected to participate at the upcoming ATP event in Beijing, commencing September 30.
