Maria Sharapova ended an almost five-month layoff as she began her Mallorca Open campaign with a 7-6 6-0 conquest of Viktoria Kuzmova on Tuesday.

The Russian star, a five-time Grand Slam champion, was handed a main draw wildcard. And she made the most of it, dropping just eight points on her first serve in the battle that lasted one hour and 29 minutes.

“It’s my first win in about three or four months,” Sharapova was quoted as saying by WTA Tennis.

“It’s great to be here in Mallorca; what a great place to train and have a warm-up tournament. It’s been amazing for all of us here, and it’s just been nice to experience it for the first time.”

This was Sharapova’s first match since January’s St. Petersburg Open, where she had pulled out ahead of her second round match due to shoulder injury.

“It’s always nice to get a victory,” the 32-year-old said. “It’s been a while since I’ve been out there, so it was good to put down a few things I’ve worked on, put the arms into action.

“There’s still a lot to work on and improve, but I had to start somewhere.”

And, she posted an emotional message on Twitter following the victory.

:First match in a few months. First win on grass since 15’. I don’t usually get my phone out until I’m finished with my cool down (only to write to mama) but this deserves a selfie,” she wrote alongside a couple of her selfies.

Sharapova will face top seed Angelique Kerber of Germany on Thursday.
