17-time Grand Slam champion, Roger Federer, heaped rich praise on retiring Lleyton Hewitt on the eve of the prestigious Australian Open 2016, which would be the latter’s swansong.

Federer and Hewitt have enjoyed fierce on-court rivalry over the years – especially in the past decade – with the Swiss leading the head-to-head record by 18-9.

However, the 34-year-old Federer believes that this rivalry has made him understand his game, and that it molded him as a better tennis player.

“Lleyton made me understand my game and definitely made me a better player too,” Federer was quoted as per saying by puntodebreak.

“I really enjoyed those battles with him and I wish him well here,” he added of his Australian counterpart, who has been drawn to play compatriot James Duckworth in the opening round.

Showing his admiration for Hewitt’s work ethic, Federer mentioned: “I (have) always admired his work ethic, his fighting spirit on the pitch, although (it) sometimes bothered me.”
