Defending champion, Juan Martin Del Potro, sailed into the quarterfinals of the Apia International Sydney after defeating top seed Fabio Fognini at the Ken Rosewall Arena on Wednesday.

Making his return after 10 months from a wrist injury, the Argentine rallied from a set down to pull off a hard-fought 4-6 6-2 6-2 triumph over 18th-ranked Italian counterpart.

“I thought I played better,” Del Potro was quoted as saying by the ATP World Tour. “I felt better on the court, especially at the end of the match. I served well, I hit good forehands and my backhands improved from yesterday.

“My wrist is the same. It’s not getting worse, so I have confidence with that. Of course, I’m very happy to beat my first top 20 player on the year.”

Next up, Del Potro is scheduled to cross the swords with qualifier Mikhail Kukushkin for a place in the last-four stage.
