High Time for Novak Djokovic to Win the French Open: McEnroe

Former American tennis player, Patrick McEnroe, insists that it’s high time for top-ranked Novak Djokovic to complete his career Grand Slam by pulling off the elusive French Open crown this year.

A 11-time Grand Slam champion, Djokovic has moved closer to winning the title here thrice in the past, but has been denied on all three occasions. That said, McEnroe believes it is the perfect time for the 29-year-old Serb to clinch a title here.

“He’s clearly number one, but he’s in his late 20s. There’s no sign that he’s slowing down, but I don’t think it’s going to get easier for him to win the French. I think there’s got to be that sense of urgency that he needs to get over the line,” McEnroe told of the top-ranked Djokovic as quoted by BT Sport.

Furthermore, he weighed Djokovic’s state against Federer – the 17-time Grand Slam champion – who also struggled all his life for a French Open title until he was crowned the champion here in 2009.

“As great a clay-court player as he’s been, similar to (Roger) Federer in his prime when he was knocking on the door and couldn’t win the French until he got a little bit of help from Robin Soderling, he (Djokovic) is running out of time,” McEnroe added.

Meanwhile, the top-seeded Djokovic is scheduled to lock horns with Lu Yen-hsun of Chinese Taipei in the first round of the tournament on Monday.
