Gael Monfils lashes out at Rafael Nadal after Madrid defeat

Gael Monfils has hit out at Rafael Nadal over delayed serving during their Madrid Masters clash earlier this week.

Monfils, who was handed a 3-6 1-6 defeat by Nadal, accused the defending champion of taking too much time before serving on several occasions, but not when the momentum was in his favour.

“What p*ssed me off was that the referee was looking at me as I said, ‘Look at him!’ It annoyed me,” Monfils was quoted as saying by Express.co.uk

He added: “He’s too strong for that. These are trivialities. It’s a bit too long. He is fast when he leads, but from time to time he takes too much time.”

This is not the first time Nadal’s timing has come under the scanner. Lukas Rosol had the same complaint when he played the Spaniard at Wimbledon 2014.

Roger Federer, too, had once said that Nadal’s tendency to take longer breaks was ‘not cool.’

Meanwhile, Nadal, who is already through to the quarter-finals in Madrid, will look to ride on his golden run when he takes on Austria’s Dominic Thiem for a place in the last-four stage.
