Making his return to the professional circuit after a 17-month injury layoff, Serbia’s Janko Tipsarevic pulled off a thrilling encounter against Brazilian qualifier Guilherme Clezar in the opening round of the US Men’s Clay Court Championship in Houston.

Tipsarevic held his nerves to save 2 match points as he ultimately manage to clinch a dramatic 6-4 3-6 7-6 triumph over his 186th-ranked counterpart at center court on Tuesday.

“I felt like this was a match I needed to win,” Tipsarevic quoted after his win. “I was ready, and I was fit. I had no confidence coming in, but saving match points with forehand winners down the line maybe proved otherwise. I really felt I had to win this match, and I would have been really sad otherwise.”

Moving on, the Serb is now scheduled to square-off against 5th seed Santiago Giraldo of Colombia in the second round.
