Agnieszka Radwanska, Simona Halep Ousted as Rain Halts Novak Djokovic’s Play at Roland Garros
Women’s seeds Agnieszka Radwanska and Simona Halep were trapped by the upset bug as rain played spoilsport again in the pre-quarterfinals of the Roland Garros on Tuesday.
Radwanska, the No. 2 seed, squandered a set and a break lead against Bulgarian journeywoman Tsvetana Pironkova, losing 6-2 3-6 3-6 to her 102nd-ranked opponent.
Sixth-seeded Halep of Romania also crashed out of the tournament after suffering a 7-6 6-3 loss to 21st seed Samantha Stosur of Australia in the other fourth-round encounter.
Stosur and Pironkova are scheduled to cross the swords in the last-eight stage here.
Meanwhile, men’s top seed Novak Djokovic’s battle against 14th seed Roberto Bautista Agut was interrupted by rain midway through the match when the Serb led 3-6 6-4 4-1.
The other men’s match ups of Tomas Berdych – David Ferrer, David Goffin – Ernests Gulbus, and Dominic Thiem – Marcel Grannolers were halted by incessant showers.
The women’s singles matches of Venus Williams – Timea Bacsinszky, KiKi Bertens – Madison Keys, and Carla Suarez-Navarro – Yulia Putintseva have also been postponed to Wednesday’s schedule.
