Rafael Nadal has been named the starter for this year’s Le Mans 24 Hours, an endurance racing event, scheduled to be held in France on June 16.

Nadal, who will be a red-hot favourite for the French Open, will start the race just six days after the final of tennis season’s second Grand Slam in Paris.

Confirming his presence, the 16-time Major winner said (via AutoSport): “France has long been in the spotlight in the sporting world in June, with the French Open and the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

“I look forward to getting to know more about this spectacular sport, the drivers and everyone involved.”

Nadal also spoke of comparisons with his fellow Spaniard, Formula One star Fernando Alonso, who will be making his debut at the racing event.

“We have in common a competitive spirit and a habit of seeking new challenges,” he said.

Meanwhile, Nadal is currently in Rome for this week’s Italian Open, where he is scheduled to kick-off his campaign against either Fernando Verdasco or Damir Dzumhur.
