Maria Sharapova shrugged off her bitter rivalry with Kristina Mladenovic following her 6-3 6-4 win in the third-round of the Mutua Madrid Open on Wednesday.

For those unaware, Mladenovic heavily criticized Sharapova after the latter was tested positive for a prohibited substance and consequently banned for 15 months.

“All the other players are saying she’s a cheater,” Mladenovic had claimed. “She can play with words and find a good lawyer but on the principles of the situation, she’s wrong.

“She has no excuse that can defend what she’s done. For me there’s no doubt.

“She wasn’t really liked. I respected her for her career but she wasn’t really nice nor polite, let’s be honest.”

But Sharapova, a former world No. 1, insisted her focus is not on the past, but only  winning matches and not on the past.

“I don’t think any of that really matters, to be honest. I don’t know if anything she said in the past or I’ve said in the past ultimately matters,” the five-time Grand Slam champion was quoted as saying by Metro.

She added: “What matters is what happens on the stage that we play on.

“I’m not entirely sure when all things are said and done and we’re walking around with canes you’re going to remember a Wimbledon first round a few years ago that I played against her, or Stuttgart in 2017 semi-final, or Madrid.”

Meanwhile, Sharapova will look to advance to only her second semi-final of the season when she meets Dutchwoman Kiki Bertens in the last-eight stage on Thursday.
