Rafael Nadal reveals two reasons why Roger Federer skipped clay season

While many are surprised with Roger Federer’s decision of skipping the entire clay season for the second time running, Swiss maestro’s arch-rival Rafael Nadal is not among them.

Nadal, who is popularly called the ‘King of Clay’, reckons Federer took the decision mainly due to two reasons: one, to keep him afresh for the rest of the season; second, to sustain his purple patch (he’s 21-2 this year).

“Of course, I understand [his decision],” Nadal was quoted as saying by ATP World Tour.

“He must have though it is a major wear to play on clay. He has a fantastic winning momentum and that on clay he could lose more matches and lose that invincible aura that he has on other surfaces.

“I think those two factors together have led to him taking that decision.”

For Federer, giving the red dirt a miss last year paid rich dividends as he went on to win the Wimbledon title. Nadal, therefore, believes the 20-time Grand Slam champion has taken the right decision this time around as well.

“In 2017 it was perfect; why would he change it?”
