There’s no love lost between Rafael Nadal and his uncle Toni despite the two ending their coaching partnership last year.

The 16-time Grand Slam champion, who is currently working with former world No. 1 Carlos Moya, has said he would love to have Toni back, although he joked that he never asked his uncle to leave.

“I am what I am because he introduced me to the sport and because he has helped me all my life,” Nadal was quoted as saying.

He continued: “Now it is not on day-to-day [basis] but I do not consider that it is gone either. You are here in Mallorca you come to training and you know that I would love if you come back.

“When I say I would be delighted if you to come back, I never asked you to leave (laughs).

“He knows that he is invited whenever he wants, it will always be like that. He can come to any tournament he wants. Above all, he is my uncle and he can do whatever he wants at any moment.”

The Spaniard’s comments come just hours after uncle Toni expressed his interest in lending a helping hand to Rafa’s rival Novak Djokovic, who has made a struggling comeback from an elbow injury.

Meanwhile, Nadal is currently competing at the Barcelona Open, where has already reached the third round. He is scheduled to square off against countryman Guillermo Garcia-Lopez for a place in the quarter-finals.
