WATCH: Coco Vandeweghe handed code violation for extended banana break at Australian Open
For Coco Vandeweghe, her first-round match against Timea Babos at the Australian Open on Monday was both bizarre as well as disappointing.
The American No. 1, who is currently ranked a career-best 9th in the world, was handed a stunning 6-7 2-6 defeat by the 51st-ranked Babos.
During the one-hour 46-minute tussle, Vadeweghe was also given a code violation by chair umpire Fergus Murphy for taking too long during a changeover as she was yet to finish a banana, which she claimed was not provided to her on time.
“I’m waiting for the bananas,” Vandeweghe hit back at Murphy, as quoted by wwos.nine.com.au. “Why should I feel uncomfortable because the court is ill-prepared?”
As for Babos, she goes on to lock horns with Carla Suarez Navarro, who beat Magdalena Frech 7-5 6-3 in the other opening rounder.
