Defending champions India extended their winning streak to five wins at the World Cup 2015 after a supreme all-round performance saw them defeat Ireland by 8 wickets in Hamilton on Tuesday.

Earlier, the flip of the coin went Ireland’s way, who had no shilly-shallying in batting first. They got off to a flying start through openers William Porterfield (67) and Paul Stirling (42), before off-spinners Ravichandran Ashwin (2-38) and Suresh Raina (1-40) exhibited some disciplined bowling to constrain runs.

Despite losing their opening duo, Ireland’s top-order looked solid with Niall O’Brien (75) playing some spectacular shots. At 206-3 in the 39th over, Ireland looked in a strong position to go beyond 300. However, fast-bowler Mohammed Shami (3-41), then, chipped in with some aggressive bowling to bundle out their opponents for 259 runs.

In response, India faced no trouble whatsoever from the Irish bowlers. First, Shikhar Dhawan (100) Rohit Sharma (64) joined 174 runs for the opening stand, before Virat Kohli (44*) and Ajinkya Rahane (33*) finished off the chase in style, as Indian roared to another convincing triumph in the 37th over itself.

Next up, India are slated to meet Zimbabwe in what would be nothing but a dead rubber. As for Ireland, they will seal their berth in the last-eight stage, should they overcome Pakistan.
