A video of Indian fast bowler Mohammed Shami mimicking West Indies Sheldon Cottrell’s salute celebrations during their World Cup clash on Thursday has gone viral.

Cottrell, after being trapped lbw by leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal, was on his way back when Shami took a couple of steps ahead while raising his arms before putting on a salute.

Cottrell, a soldier with Jamaican Defence Force, celebrates in the same way – although with much more panache – every time he lets his ball do the talking.

Shami’s ‘celebrations’ didn’t go down well with everyone though.

“It’s part of his tribute to his country’s armed forces, guys. Not cool, in my opinion,” one person opined.

Another one corroborated, saying: “Precisely. Just thinking about how the country would have erupted in flames if another country’s player had mimicked an Indian celebration that had an army connect. #Hypocrisy.”

Earlier in the day, Shami wreacked havoc with the ball as he claimed four wickets to bundle West Indies out for just 143 as India won by 125 runs to continue their unbeaten run at the mega event.
