One of the most bizarre dismissals of all time took place during a County Championship Division I match between Essex and Hampshire on Monday.

Hampshire’s Mason Crane edged one off Essex off-spinner Simon Harmer to wicket-keeper Adam Wheater, who failed to collect the ball in his first attempt.

The ball deflected off his gloves and was about to hit the ground, only for Wheater to show quick reflexes as he managed to kick it in the air.

And guess what? Skipper Ryan ten Doeschate, standing at short leg, managed to pluck it.

No wonder, they burst into wild celebrations as a perplexed Crane couldn’t believe his eyes.

Harmer went on to finish with figures of 7-38 as Hampshire followed their first-innings total of 118 with an even dismal score of 88 to hand Essex (214) an innings victory.
