Making his One-Day International (ODI) captaincy debut for Australia, Steve Smith smashed an unbeaten ton against England in Hobart on Friday to assure his side’s place in the summit clash of the ongoing triangular series Down Under.

Earlier, riding on an impressive 141-run knock from opener Ian Bell and a half-century from Joe Root (69), England amassed 303-8 in 50 overs. For Australia, Gurinder Sandhu took 2 wickets, while Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins, James Faulkner and Moises Henriques chipped in with a wicket apiece.

Chasing a colossal total, the Australians got off to a blazing start, before stumbling with a couple of quick wickets in the middle overs. However, Smith (102*) held his nerves – alongside some crucial contributions from Brad Haddin (42), Glenn Maxwell and James Faulkner (35) – as the hosts won in the last-over thriller.

With 3 wins in as many games, Australia have confirmed their ticket to the series finale. The next match of the series will see India and Australia in action on January 26.
