Australia continued their World Cup preparations with a second successive win at the ongoing triangular series after pulling off a thriller against reigning world champions India at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Sunday.

Earlier, Indian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni won the toss and decided to bat first. Riding on a fluent century from opener Rohit Sharma (138) and a half-ton from Suresh Raina (51), the touring team posted 267-8 in 50 overs.

For Australia, left-arm seamer Mitchell Starc was the wrecker-in-chief, as his six-wicket haul single-handedly took the game away for their opponents, who otherwise, could have even amassed 300 runs in the first innings.

Chasing the total, Aaron Finch guided the hosts’ innings throughout before giving away his wicket at 96. Subsequently, the hosts overcame a disciplined Indian bowling unit to hold their nerves and attained the target with 6 balls and 4 wickets to spare.

Having beaten England in the tournament opener on Friday, Australia now have a few days to put their feet up, as Tuesday is scheduled to see the encounter between India and England, in what is going to be an imperative match-up for both the teams.
