India kicked-off their World Cup preparations on a high, after the hosts exhibited scintillating all-round performance to demolish Sri Lanka by 169 runs at the Barabati Stadium in Cuttack on Sunday.

Earlier, Sri Lanka skipper Angelo Mathews won the toss and put India to bat first, keeping in mind the dew factor in sub-continental conditions. However, his decision ultimately proved to be the wrong one as the tourists put up a substandard performance to face a humiliating loss.

India’s innings was primarily driver by two batsmen – Ajinkya Rahane (111) and Shikhar Dhawan (113). The opening pair amassed a record 231-run partnership for the first wicket at this very venue. Furthermore, Suresh Raina’s quick fire 52 and a couple of maximums from Axar Patel (14*) helped the hosts set a massive 364-run target for Sri Lanka.

In reply, Sri Lanka suffered an early breakthrough, losing their star batsman Tillakaratne Dilshan (18), before Kumar Sangakkara (13), Upul Tharanga (28), and Seekkuge Prasanna (5) departed without much ado.

Their disappointment further escalated when Mahela Jayawardene’s (43) gutsy knock came to end and Angelo Mathews (23) also giving away his wicket soon thereafter, leaving the tourists in jeopardy.

Subsequently, Sri Lanka’s lower middle-order failed to handle the pressure and got bundled out before 40 overs, falling 169 runs short of the target.

For India, Ishant Sharma was the pick of the bowlers with 4 wickets under his belt, while Umesh Yadav and Axar Patel picked up two wickets apiece.

The two teams now meet in the second match on November 6 in Motera.
