Sri Lanka began their India tour with a vulnerable defeat from the hands of hosts’ ‘A’ team, as the tourists showed lack of fortitude to suffer a 87-run loss in the one-day practice match at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai on Thursday.

Earlier, Sri Lanka skipper Angelo Mathews won the toss and decided to field first, which eventually proved to be an erroneous decision, as India ‘A’ – riding on centuries from Rohit Sharma and Manish Pandey – piled up a colossal total of 382-6 in 50 overs.

Making his comeback to the international arena after being sidelined by multiple injuries, Rohit looked in good touch as he smashed 18 fours accompanied by a six to amass 142 runs in just 111 balls before being run-out. He was ably supported by Manish Pandey, who remained unbeaten at 135* (113). The duo recorded a giant 214-run partnership. Opener Unmukt Chand (54) and captain Manoj Tiwari (36) also made notable contributions.

In response, the Sri Lankan batsmen looked scratchy throughout in the middle, suffering some early breakthroughs. Opener Kusal Perera (4) and TM Dilshan (14) surrendered to India ‘A’ bowlers in the first 10 overs.

Thereafter, Upul Tharanga scored a fluent half-ton before departing for 76, and then, the visitors were trapped by the hosts completely, as wickets kept on falling after regular intervals and were ultimately restricted to 294-9 in 50 overs’ quota.

Up next, India and Sri Lanka are scheduled to cross the swords in the 5-match one-day international series beginning from November 2.
