Chennai Super Kings is a team of Indian Premier League that has qualified for the upcoming knockout round as the 2nd team. They have played total fourteen group stage matches like the rest of the teams and won highest nine times so far. But considering run rate, they are one step behind than Sunrisers Hyderabad. Now, they have finished the group stage by holding the 2nd position on the point table where SRH is on the top position. Though, they got the playoff round ticket but still the rest mathes were so important for them. They played well and claimed the victory in their last match which was also the last group stage match in the tournament. In the last match, they faced Kings XI Punjab and in there, Chennai Super Kings won by 5 wickets.

Kings XI Punjab had hope to move to the next round but to get the ticket, they had to win the last match against Chennai Super Kings. Like others, Kings XI Punjab played two matches against CSK in group stage where in the first one which was the home match of KXIP, they won the game. But in return game at the home venue of CSK, Chennai won the match. So, they are now in even position.

Kings XI Punjab played fourteen matches in group level where they won six times so far. The 4th placeholder team won the seven group stage matches here. So, KXIP went too close but they did not get success.

The match between CSK and KXIP was the 56th match in the tournament which took place in 20th May, 2018 at Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune. In the match, the local team Chennai Super Kings won the toss and decided to field first. One of their player Harbhajan Singh played total 250 T20 matches including that one. So, Kings XI Punjab started to bat with Rahul and Gayle. Top three players did not touch two figure runs. Tiwary, Miller, Nair and Patel played almost good and added few runs. Based on their score team Kings XI Punjab presented 153 runs target in front of CSK. Nair scored highest 54 runs for the team KXIP. They lost all wickets in 19.4 overs where Ngidi took four wickets highest for CSK.

By losing five wickets Chennai Super Kings rwched the destination in 19.1 overs. Raina and Dhoni remained not out with 61 runs and 16 runs so far.
