Led by a fluent century from stand-in skipper Virat Kohli, India exhibited a committed performance with the willow in response to Australia’s first innings score of 517-7, by amassing 369-5 at stumps on Day 3 in Adelaide on Thursday.

Kohli, who made his Test debut as the captain in this very match, became the third Indian skipper to smash a ton in the first match; the other players being Vijay Hazare and Sunil Gavaskar.

Earlier, the Indian got off to a flying start through openers Shikhar Dhawan and Murali Vijay, before the former departed for 25 after being bowled out by Aussie quick, Ryan Harris.

Vijay continued to impress with some aggressive strokes as Cheteshwar Pujara also looked composed on the other end. The duo put up 81 runs for the 3rd wicket, before Vijay (53) edged a delivery from Mitchell Johnson after completing his fifty.

Subsequently, Pujara perished after a well-made 73, as Kohli completed his ton. Ajinkya Rahane also looked in good touch, scoring 62 runs.

Just a few overs before stumps, Kohli (115) pulled one straight into the hands of Harris at deep mid-wicket, as India winded up the day 148 runs short of the hosts.

Rohit Sharma (33*) and Wriddhiman Saha (1*) were unbeaten at the crease.
