Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez may be in the form of his life, but that doesn’t make him the best out there, believes top-ranked super middleweight Callum Smith.

Canelo became a four-weight world champion after he stunningly knocked Sergey Kovalev out in the eleventh round of their fight for the WBO light heavyweight title at the MGM Grand over the weekend.

Even as Canelo, who started as a 140-pound boxer, has recorded wins over bigger guys like Gennady Golovkin, Rocky Fielding and Daniel Jacobs (apart from Kovalev, of course), Smith appeared unfazed on odds of trading punches with the Mexican.

“I’ve seen an interview, saying he’d consider cruiserweight. I don’t know, but if he comes to 168, I believe I’m the No 1 in that division, so he’ll have to come and beat me to take that place,” said Smith, who has wins over George Groves, Rocky Fielding, Hassan N’Dam N’Jikam and Erik Skoglund among his 26-0 record.

He’s not firm at facing Canelo though. “But I’m not going to waste my career waiting for a fight that might never happen. If it happens, it happens, if it doesn’t, there’s still plenty of other big fights.”

Smith is scheduled to defend his WBA Super and WBC Diamond belts against John Ryder (28-4) come November 23.
