Dwayne Bowe Suspended For First Game Of 2014 NFL Season

Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Dwayne Bowe has had a mixed bag of results heading into the 2014 season. Initial reports had the star wideout coming into camp in shape after losing weight in order to increase his movement.

However, with training camp in full swing, Bowe has apparently been plagued by a case of the drops, something that is obviously going to have to subside if Bowe and the Chiefs want to build on their surprising playoff season of 2013. Head coach Andy Reid recently spoke up to ESPN.com about Bowe’s woes, clarifying that they may be the product of an injured finger that has been dislocated repeatedly:

“His finger is shot,” Reid said Thursday. “It’s been thrown out of place about 15 times, and he’s not catching the ball. But he’s getting his work done. You can practice with that type of thing.”

However, it looks like Bowe will have some time to heal up, as NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport has reported the former LSU Tiger will sit out the first game of the regular season after a suspension stemming from a November arrest for marijuana possession. Bowe released an official statement on the issue courtesy of NFL.com:

“I am extremely sorry that I can’t be on the field for the first game of the 2014 season because I made an error in judgment,” Bowe said Friday in a statement released by the team. “I take responsibility for my mistake, and it will not happen again. I hope that my teammates, coaches, and Chiefs fans accept my sincere apology. I will be supporting my teammates in week one, and I cannot wait to get back on the field to help us win in week two and beyond as we work towards our goal of winning the Super Bowl.”

Aiming to redeem himself, Bowe has several roadblocks on the road towards accomplishing that goal. But with the Chiefs largely focusing on All-Pro running back Jamal Charles to carry their run-heavy offense, he won’t be leaned upon as much as other star wide receivers throughout the league.

The Chiefs will play their first game against the Tennessee Titans on September 7, and Junior Hemingway is expected to take Bowe’s spot while he is out.
