It’s a known fact that Juan Martin del Potro is a good human being. The Argentine tennis star has been time and again praised for showing sportsmanship on court.

It was time for Julien Benneteau to experience that on Thursday.

The French veteran, playing in his final Roland Garros this year, was handed a 4-6 3-6 2-6 defeat at the hands of del Potro, the No. 5 seed, in the Round of 64.

And, del Potro had some kind words for Benneteau when the two got together for the handshake.

“He told me that it was a pity that it was all over for me, but that I had a precious career. [He told me] to enjoy life with my family now and that he felt very happy for me,” Benneteu said of del Potro.

“It made a lot of sense. Marvelous he is,” added the former world No. 25, who had announced he will be calling a time on his 18-year career this season.

As for del Potro, he goes on to meet 31st seed Albert Ramos-Vinolas of Spain in the third round on Saturday.
