4th seed Caroline Wozniacki stormed into the quarterfinals of the WTA Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart after defeating Czech Republic’s Lucie Safarova on Thursday.

The Danish star overcame a tricky first set to pull off a 7-6 6-1 conquest of her 13th-ranked adversary in the battle that lasted for an hour and 20 minutes to seal her berth in the last-eight stage.

However, it was the end of the road for top-seeded Russian Maria Sharapova, who squandered early lead to lose out to Germany’s Angelique Kerber 2-6 7-5 6-1.

3rd seed Petra Kvitova also suffered a stunning straight-set loss to American journeywoman Madison Brengle 6-3 7-6 in the other second-round encounter.
